From the first moment you hear Garrett Kato’s music, you could guess that he was a Canadian-born/Australian-based singer-songwriter from his soulful, indie-folk earthy sounds. It’s as if the unique sound of Canada’s very own Donovan Woods and Australia’s Xavier Rudd took a stroll together through a lush coastline. This is best exemplified through Garrett’s powerful new single, premiering today on Sights and Sounds Media, “Holding On To You”.
Garrett Kato spoke about his inspiration for his newest work, explaining that “Holding On To You is about letting go of something or someone. The verses I wrote on my iPhone while I was rather intoxicated. This method rarely works for me since I’m usually
quite particular with my words, but in this instance the words almost felt like paint on a canvas with a more ambiguous meaning. It still had captured the emotion and feeling I was searching for.”
Garrett moved to Byron Bay, Australia in 2010 on a whim after quitting his day job to pursue his passion for music. He first started to make a living by busking on street corners and performing five gigs a week in any place he could find with a stage. It wasn’t until he caught the attention of some of Australia’s biggest acts that he was able to take his career to the next level. With over 20 million worldwide streams on Spotify to date, producing for a string of Australian indie folk acts like Ziggy Alberts, Kyle Lionheart, Pierce Brothers and Riley Pearce; Garrett is looking ahead to a big year of touring and releasing a stunning collection of new music, and from what we’ve heard so far, we won’t be disappointed.
